What you do when work is never done?

When you feel that you have been doing your job for a very long time but you are stuck: you may have been doing something wrong. When work is never done, it might also be that the task at hand is far too advanced for your skill set at the moment. Many people suffer from this. It might be a matter of project management or might be the task itself.

 

This is the hardest part of being employed. When you are trapped in a task and haven’t moved forward a bit.  This is unhealthy! Your work stress level rises, mentally you feel unmotivated and you may constantly think of bitter things, especially when you notice your working environment is slowly going down to oblivion.

 

The best thing to do is evaluate the current situation. When work is never done, sit for a moment and try to unravel this mystery. Sometimes the most complex problems have the simplest solutions. Try to go over the next few items and isolate the real problem.

 

Let’s evaluate:

 

  • Is this your first time on this task? Most of the time this is the problem, when people are assigned to a job they do not have the expertise or complete know how of the situation, it will take longer to finish. Try to get an experienced fellow to help you out. Ask nicely and treat your buddy with really good coffee.

 

  • Are you assigned to the same task as one colleague is? When both of you have not completed the same work and you have done some extensive research, both are qualified; it shouldn’t be your problem. Try to talk terms with your manager and ask for more options. You and your colleague should do this. You can also compare notes.  Try to discern your milestones and contrast the differences in your outputs. Take the results to your manager and let him deal with some of the stress.

 

  • Have you undergone any training for this? No? Ask for one. Find a mentor who can help you with this problem.  You may learn things on your own, but having a mentor or a training session should make the earning process easier and quicker.

 

  • Are targets realistic? Target goals are usually based on timeframes. Most of the time, managers will squeeze in goals in a shorter period of time than needed to give extra room just in case. This may have also been done to promote a positive appeal from top level executives. Try to set realistic goals that can be done.

 

  • Are you Building or Repairing? Building means you are creating. Try to set to simple things. Revisions can always be made later to improve. In this way you get some accomplishments. Don’t think of building the roof without any foundations. Repairing, meaning you are trying to recreate a previously working process, or anything that may have broken down,   set it to the simplest of all purposes.  Make it work before you make it better.

 

  • Do you have the tools? Working requires tools. The first rule in working: at least have the right tool. If you are developing software, please use the correct computer specs. If you are cooking pancakes, use the right pan size. Using the right tool accelerates your work rate. A simple change of tool, the proper one, will give you a boost.

 

  • Do you have what it takes? This is the mother of all questions. This is also the most stressful. If you think you have what it takes, Please continue with your work. It will get finished (Unless you are so full of yourself) because you are thinking positively and you will continue to find ways to get the work done. When you are honestly saying you don’t, then you should definitely have to search what you lack. Do this first before proceeding. Work is never done if you lack the skills. Now if you are just scared of completing the job, then you should quit and find an easier one.  You can’t complete work by being negative. Be positive and have some courage to face the obstacles.

 

Let’s talk basics:

 


When work is never done, go back to basics. Find another starting point and find a completely new angle. Take another look; take more time to seek out what you may have left behind. Try to read through the next items and determine what your next actions are.

 

Be creative – If you are really stuck with a problem, seek out new ideas, not necessarily yours! Your work is never done partly because you ran out of ideas. Find new ones, ask around and find something that might work. Try everything, even if it is really tedious, be patient. Add new ways, use new methods.

 

Set new targets – don’t go for the bull’s eye. Try to hit some options first before getting to the real deal. This way you can find the smaller problems. Get milestones before getting to the finish line. Try to see what is going on with the other fields of work. Cause and effect style of thinking works when work is never done. Now gather your milestones and setup for a big blow, you might hit the jackpot.

 

Get inspiration – You can always seek out other tasks before going on with the real work that hasn’t been finished. This is a wise man’s break. Sit in with a colleague who has their own problems and try to talk to them for about one minute concerning their problems! Take your mind off you job first. Let your colleague do the thinking for his problem. Try out another colleague and do the same thing. Never mind if finishes his task or not, you will find inspiration by noticing some of their solutions that you have not applied. Get back to work and do your stuff!

 

Do away with your routine – Your routine may be affecting your way of thinking. Your mind never gets to function creatively by being bounded. Go for an early lunch or coffee break, read emails 2 hours after arriving at work, read Skype shout outs of people who are offline, go for tea instead of coffee or smoke half a stick. This way something is different, it will affect the way you see things and the way you approach things.

 

Get back to the simplest fun – Watch the Flintstones, you will see how simple things can be. Get more logical. Watch a sit com about work and laugh your ass off.  This will freshen you up. Lay-off of stress and have some fun. You can think well after this, get serious only when you need to be. Remember, you can smile while working. Get some corny jokes out to your colleagues and laugh at yourself.

 

When your work is never done, it might not be you at all. There are so many factors that can affect you. Seek help as often as possible but be responsible. Take this as a challenge. There are no routes to follow, just get to the destination. The most important thing is to try something new. Innovate each day and you’ll find more answers getting you closer to finishing work.
